Short 'Shorts' Competition Merits - Hong Kong

The Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) Section of the Hong Kong Education Bureau would like to thank Ms Xu Xi, Writer-in-Residence with the Department of English at the City University of Hong Kong, for connecting us with the organisers of the Manchester Children's Book Festival (MCBF) and for encouraging students in Hong Kong to share their stories with a wider, international audience. Ms Xu Xi was the head adjudicator of the 'Shorts' 2012 short story writing competition organised by the NET Section.

The NET Section would also like to thank the organisers of the MCBF for giving young writers in Hong Kong this wonderful opportunity to share their stories with an international audience through the Reading and Writing Relay.

Thank you, MCBF!

Hong Kong Sends News

A total of 73 schools sent teachers to workshops where they collaborated in small groups and experienced the process of planning and writing a short story based on a selection of images, and were thus eligible to enter teams of students in 'Shorts' 2012. There were two categories in the competition, the Short Shorts category (short stories of 300-600 words) and the Long Shorts category (short stories of 600-1200 words). In both categories, students were required to collaborate in teams of 3-4 to plan, write and record a short story based on a selection of images provided by the NET (The Native-speaking English Teachers) Section.

The 'Shorts' 2012 entry deadline was 25 May 2012 and we received a total of 92 entries from 39 schools. There were 66 Long Shorts entries and 26 Short Shorts entries. In each category, judges decided on a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winner, as well as seven certificates of merit. The prizes will be announced at the NET Section Competitions Awards Ceremony for Student Production and Performance on Tuesday, 3 July 2012.

These are the prize-winning teams of the Short Shorts category of our 'Shorts' 2012 short story writing competition.
