The Portico Engages Pupils

Arthur Bostrom leads a Dickens workshop at The Portico Library. Students from Birkenhead High School Academy get creative with the Miss Havisham's first encounter with Pip in Great Expectations and Carol Ann Duffy's poem,  Havisham (displayed in MMU's Holden Gallery). These girls have a mind-blowing facility to create deep, passionate poetry.

Arthur reads the from chapter eight of Great Expectations and also Carol Ann Duffy's poem, Havisham.

Short 'Shorts' Competition Merits - Hong Kong

The Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) Section of the Hong Kong Education Bureau would like to thank Ms Xu Xi, Writer-in-Residence with the Department of English at the City University of Hong Kong, for connecting us with the organisers of the Manchester Children's Book Festival (MCBF) and for encouraging students in Hong Kong to share their stories with a wider, international audience. Ms Xu Xi was the head adjudicator of the 'Shorts' 2012 short story writing competition organised by the NET Section.

The NET Section would also like to thank the organisers of the MCBF for giving young writers in Hong Kong this wonderful opportunity to share their stories with an international audience through the Reading and Writing Relay.

Thank you, MCBF!

Pre-school children enjoying a story
All our children enjoy exploring and using their imagination with books and magazines. We re-create stories using puppets or actions to encourage the children to make up their own stories from experiences they have had.

Parents enjoy coming to the nursery to read to the children which supports our strong bonds with families.
